How to Read the USB Cables in Your Mystery Box

Almost every electronics mystery box contains at least one USB cable, and almost nobody looks at it twice. That is a mistake, because two cables with the same plug can differ by a factor of forty in what they carry. One charges your laptop and moves a film in seconds; the other trickles power and carries no data at all. Here is how you read what you were given, in about two minutes.

Same Plug, Different Cable

The USB-C connector is the one thing the standards body got everyone to agree on. What runs through it was left open, and the result is that the oval plug on your cable tells you nothing about the wires behind it. A cable can carry 60 watts or 240; it can move data at 480 megabits per second or 40 gigabits; it can carry a video signal or refuse to. Two cables that look identical in your hand can sit at opposite ends of every one of those ranges.

Above that come 5, 10, 20 and 40 gigabits, and each step needs more wires in the cable and a shorter maximum length. A 40 gigabit cable is rarely longer than a metre; a charge-only cable can be two or three metres because there is nothing inside to degrade.

Read the first row honestly, because it is where most mystery box cables live. A cable with no marking is not faulty and not a fake; it is the base specification, which is a perfectly good phone charging cable.   2. Charge a phone with your usual charger. Note the charging speed the phone reports, or simply the percentage gained in ten minutes, and compare with your own cable.
  3. Plug the phone into a computer. If the computer sees the phone, the cable carries data. If it only charges, it is a power-only cable, which some cheap cables are.
  4. Wiggle the plug gently while charging. Charging that cuts in and out is a bad connector, and that is the one genuine fault a cable can have.
  5. Do not use it for a laptop unless it carries a 100W or 240W logo. An unmarked cable will charge a laptop slowly at best, and the laptop will tell you so.

That test separates the three outcomes you care about: a normal cable, a charge-only cable, and a broken one. Why You Should Not Trust the Printed Wattage

Printing "100W" on a cable jacket costs nothing and is not checked by anyone unless the maker has submitted the cable for certification. The chip inside is what the charger believes, not the print. A cable printed 100W without an e-marker will negotiate 60W and behave as a 60W cable, which is harmless. The dangerous case is rarer: a cable with a chip that claims 5A and wire that cannot carry it, which warms up under a laptop charger.
