LED Strip Lights From a Mystery Box: Power Supply and Safe Setup

An LED strip is a roll of light on a reel, and one of the most satisfying finds in a mystery box: ten minutes after opening it your room looks different. It is also a mains accessory with a cut line, a voltage and a power budget, and a strip set up wrong is dim at one end, warm at the plug, or dead on day two. Here is how you match, cut and stick it.

Three Kinds of Strip, and Which You Have

Read the print on the strip itself, not the box you took it from. Somewhere along the tape, usually near the cut marks, it says 5V, 12V or 24V. A 5V strip plugs into a USB port or charger and runs a short length, a metre or two, off a phone adapter; it is the simplest kind and the one you are most likely to find in a mystery box. A 12V or 24V strip runs off a plug-in power supply that came in the same packet, and the number on the strip must match the number on the supply. Put a 12V strip on a 24V supply and you burn it out in seconds; put a 24V strip on a 12V supply and it barely glows. The strip and its supply are a pair, and you keep them together.

The supply is also the only mains device in the kit, and the one you should inspect. A plug-in LED driver should carry a recognised safety listing, usually as a Class 2 supply, which limits what it can deliver in a fault. A driver with no mark is a driver you use for an evening and then replace with a listed one. Every strip draws a certain number of watts per metre, printed on the reel or the box you have: cheap single-colour strips around five, colour-changing strips with larger chips around fourteen. Multiply by the length you plan to run and you have your load. The supply that came in the kit has a rating in watts or amps; at 12V, one amp is twelve watts. A strip that draws more than the supply can give leaves you with a dim strip, a flicker, or a cooked driver. A supply run right at its rating runs hot; the safe habit is to keep the load under about 80 percent of it.

Five metres of a 14-watt-per-metre colour strip is 70 watts, and the little 24-watt driver that often ships with such a kit is nowhere near enough for the full reel. The kit is fine; your assumption that you can light the whole reel from that driver is not. Cut the strip to the length the driver can feed, or buy a larger listed driver for the full run.

Read the last row if your room is large. Current fades along a thin copper strip, and past about five metres you will see a 12V run go dimmer at the far end. Feeding power at both ends, or splitting the run into two shorter ones from the same driver, fixes it; a longer strip on one feed does not.

Note: Cut on the line and nowhere else. Every strip you will meet has cut marks, a scissors symbol across a pair of copper pads, every few centimetres. A cut you make between marks kills that segment, and on a colour strip may kill everything after it. Cut once, at a mark, with sharp scissors, and if you need to reconnect, use the clip connectors sold for the strip's width rather than twisting wires. Never cover a running strip with fabric or foam; the chips need air.

Setting It Up in Order

  1. Unroll and test before you stick anything. Connect the strip to its supply on the floor, run through every colour and mode on the remote, and look for a dark segment. A strip with a dead section is a fault to report now, not after it is glued to the ceiling.
  2. Measure and cut to the length your driver can feed, on a mark.
  3. Clean the surface with alcohol and let it dry. The adhesive on a cheap strip is the weakest part of the kit, and dust or grease under it means a strip on the floor by morning. On textured or painted walls, add mounting clips or a strip of double-sided tape rated for the weight.
  4. Route the supply's cable to a socket where the driver has air around it; not behind your curtain or under a cushion.
  5. Point the remote's sensor at the little receiver on the cable. Infrared remotes need a line of sight, and a receiver tucked behind a shelf is a "broken" remote.
  6. Touch the driver after an hour. Warm is normal. Hot to hold, or smelling of plastic, means your load is too high or the driver is poor; shorten the strip or replace the driver.

Where Strips Work Best

Behind your television, under a shelf, along the underside of a desk, behind a headboard: places where the strip itself is hidden and only the glow shows. A strip you stick in plain sight shows every chip as a dot. What This Means When You Order

You should expect an LED strip from a mystery box to be a short 5V USB strip or a 12V kit with a small driver, and plan the length around the driver rather than the reel. Test it on the floor, cut on a mark, clean the wall, and keep the driver in the open. Can I use a different power supply with the LED strip from my box?

Only one with the same voltage printed on the strip and a rating comfortably above the load. Voltage first: 12V strips take 12V drivers, 24V strips take 24V, and a 5V USB strip takes any USB charger. Then watts: length times the strip's watts per metre, divided by 0.8, is the smallest driver you should use. Check the barrel plug's size and polarity match, and prefer a driver with a safety listing over the unmarked one in the kit.

Why is the far end of the strip dimmer than the start?

Voltage drop. The copper in a thin strip has resistance, and by the end of a long run the chips are seeing less than they need, so they glow weaker and, on colour strips, redder. It shows past roughly five metres at 12V and later at 24V. The cure is a second feed wire to the far end, or two half-length pieces each wired back to the driver. Buying a larger driver on its own changes nothing.

Where can I cut an LED strip?

Only across the marked lines, which sit between pairs of copper pads every few centimetres and usually carry a small scissors symbol. Cutting anywhere else breaks the circuit for that segment and sometimes for everything downstream. Make one straight snip through the middle of the pads so half of each pad stays on both pieces. To rejoin an offcut, snap-on connectors for that strip width beat twisted wire or a soldering iron.

The strip keeps falling off the wall. Is the adhesive faulty?

It is doing what thin, cheap adhesive does on a surface that was not prepared. Wipe the wall or shelf with rubbing alcohol, let it dry fully, and press the strip on firmly in one pass rather than repositioning it. Textured paint, wallpaper and dusty tops under a shelf will not hold any tape; use the little plastic clips sold for strips, or a stronger double-sided mounting tape, and the strip stays up.

Is it safe to leave LED strips on all night?

With a listed driver running well under its rating and the strip uncovered, yes; the chips themselves run cool. The risks are a driver squeezed behind furniture where it cannot shed heat, a load close to the driver's limit, or a strip buried under fabric. Touch the driver after the first hour: warm is fine, too hot to hold is not. An unmarked driver from an unknown maker is the one thing in the kit not to leave running unattended.

The remote does nothing. What should I check?

Line of sight first. Most strip remotes are infrared and must point at the small receiver on the cable between driver and strip, so a receiver tucked behind the television or under a shelf edge cannot see the remote at all; move it into the open. Then the battery: pull the plastic tab from the coin cell, or replace it. A remote that still does nothing with the receiver in view and a fresh cell is a fault to report.
