Smart Bulbs From a Mystery Box: Will It Fit Your Socket?

A smart bulb has to fit something in your house before it can do anything, and the fitting is decided by a code on the base you have probably never read. Get the base, the voltage and the switch right, and a colour-changing bulb is a small delight. Get one wrong and it does not light, or flickers whenever someone touches the wall. Here is how you check all three before you climb on the chair.

The Code on the Base

Every bulb base carries a letter and a number, and you can read both with the bulb in your hand. The letter is the type: E for an Edison screw, B for a bayonet with two pins, G for the pin bases on spotlights. The number is the diameter in millimetres. So E26 is a 26 mm screw, the standard base in North American homes; E27 is a 27 mm screw, the standard across Europe, Asia and most of the world; B22 is a 22 mm bayonet, standard in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Smaller sockets take E12 in the US and E14 elsewhere, the candle sizes, and your downlights take GU10 or similar pin bases.

Unscrew the bulb that is already in the fitting you want to use and read the base. That is the only reliable way to know what you have, because a lamp bought abroad, a vintage fitting or a rental flat can carry a different base from the rest of the house. Read the third row twice, because it is the one that surprises you. A smart bulb needs constant mains power to stay connected to your network, and it is switched on and off in the app or by voice.   2. Switch off at the wall, swap the bulb, switch on. The bulb should light in its default white immediately, before any app; a bulb that stays dark on a known-good fitting is a fault.

Will an E27 bulb from a mystery box fit my E26 socket?

Physically, yes: the one-millimetre difference in thread diameter is within the socket's tolerance, and the two screw into each other's fittings without an adapter. Anything built only for European 220 to 240V supply glows weakly at best on a 120V American circuit, whereas a rating of 100 to 240V covers both. Look for that line first.
