What Is Inside
A solar garden light is four parts: a small solar panel on top, a rechargeable battery underneath it, an LED, and a light sensor that switches the LED on at dusk and off at dawn. By day the panel trickles charge into the battery; by night the battery runs the LED until it is empty or the sun comes up. The battery is the part you are most likely to misunderstand. It is a single ordinary rechargeable cell, usually a nickel-metal-hydride AA or AAA of a few hundred milliamp-hours, sometimes a small lithium cell in newer sets, and it is the only part that wears out. Getting Them to Light the First Night
- Pull the plastic tab from the battery compartment and find the on-off switch, usually underneath; new lights ship disabled so they do not run flat in the carton.
- Give the panel a full day of direct sun before you judge it, in a spot that gets four to six hours; a windowsill behind glass or a shaded border is not enough.
- Replace the cell, not the light, when it dims after a year or two: a standard rechargeable AA or AAA of the same type costs a dollar or two.
- Open the battery cover, usually a twist-off or a small screw on the underside, and look for a plastic strip sticking out; pull it. That strip isolates the battery for shipping, and a light with the tab still in will never turn on for you.
- Find the switch. Many sets have a tiny on-off slide next to the battery or on the underside, shipped in the off position. You slide it to on.
- Peel the film off the solar panel. A protective sheet left on cuts the charge by more than you would think.

Read the windowsill row if your plan was to use them indoors: your glass cuts the useful light sharply, and a solar light on a sill is a slowly dying one. Note: In winter the same lights run for fewer hours, and that is physics rather than failure on your part: the days are shorter, the sun is lower, and a cold cell holds less. When the Battery Goes
After a year or two of charging by day and draining by night, the cell holds less, the light dims earlier each evening, and one night it does not come on for you at all. That is the cell, not the light, and the replacement costs a dollar or two. Open the cover and read the cell: you will find a NiMH AA or AAA marked with a capacity such as 600 mAh and a voltage of 1.2 V. Buy the same type and size, and be careful about two things you might otherwise do. Do not fit an ordinary alkaline battery, which is not rechargeable and can leak or split under a solar charger; and do not fit a lithium cell into a light built for NiMH, because the voltage is different and the charging circuit is not built for it. Fault or Placement?
- Nothing on the first night. Tab, switch, film, then a full day of sun. Your placement.

What This Means When You Order

Why will my new solar lights not turn on?
In order of likelihood for you: a plastic isolating strip is still in the battery compartment, the on-off switch on the underside is set to off, the protective film is still on the panel, or the cell has not had a full day of direct sun since it left the factory. Fix all four, give them a sunny day in the open, then cover the panel with your hand; if it lights, it works, and the rest is placement.
How much sun do solar garden lights need?
Four to six hours of direct sunlight on the panel for a full night's run in summer, and more is better.
